What street food costs, city by city
Price ranges for common street dishes in Hanoi, Hue, Hoi An, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City, each with a source and the date we checked it, followed by the overcharging cases that have made the news and the habits that prevent them.
How to read these tables
Each figure is a range in Vietnamese dong (VND) taken from a named source, with the month the source was published or updated. Street prices move: Ho Chi Minh City eateries reported rises of VND 3,000 to 20,000 a dish in March 2026, and Hanoi noodle shops added VND 5,000 to several bowls in the first half of the year. Use the ranges to spot a price that is far out of line, not to argue over VND 5,000.
For a sense of scale, Tuoi Tre converted VND 430,000 as US$16.3 in June 2026, which is a little over VND 26,000 to the dollar. Exchange rates change daily; check one before you travel. Where a source quoted a single price rather than a range, the table says so.

We found no recent sourced figure for a plate of com tam; ask before you order, and compare with the banh mi and noodle prices above. Vietcetera's comparison is a useful reminder that a dearer banh mi mostly reflects rent, staff, opening hours and fillings rather than quality.

How overcharging happens
Overcharging of visitors is a recurring story in the Vietnamese press, and the authorities treat the clearest cases seriously. Some reported food cases:
- Hanoi, June 2026. A pavement vendor near Hoan Kiem Lake charged a foreign tourist VND 430,000 for ten small fried cakes that usually sell for about VND 5,000 each. A video spread online, ward police fined her VND 225,000 for unlicensed vending, and told her to display her prices. She offered to refund the tourist.
- Hanoi, Tet 2025. A crab noodle shop charged VND 1.2 million for three bowls, ten times the usual price, paid by bank transfer. The owner said it was a joke and offered a refund; the ward suspended the shop while it investigated.
- Hanoi Old Quarter. A tour guide quoted by VnExpress in March 2026 said foreign tourists are sometimes asked four or five times the normal price for snacks such as pickled fruit sold by weight.
Hanoi's Department of Tourism has said that failing to display prices and pushing customers into purchases are fraudulent practices. Critics quoted in the same report said fines of a few hundred thousand dong are too low and proposed VND 5 to 10 million; that was a proposal, not the law, when we checked.

Habits that prevent it
- Ask the price before you order, or before the vendor starts bagging or cutting. "Bao nhieu tien?" is enough.
- For anything sold by weight, such as fruit, sweets or grilled meat, ask the price per portion, not per kilo.
- Prefer stalls with a price board or prices written on the cart. They are easier to check and to dispute.
- Pay with small notes and count your change. Keep a VND 500,000 note separate from your daily cash.
- On a QR bank transfer, read the amount on your phone before you confirm. A transfer is hard to reverse.
- Be wary of vendors who hand you a carrying pole, a hat or a snack "for a photo" before naming a price.
- If a bill is far out of line, stay calm, ask for the price of each item, and pay what is reasonable. Hotel staff or the police can help if a dispute escalates.
Most stalls charge visitors the same as everyone else. A visitor price VND 5,000 above what a local pays is common and not worth a fight. The cases above made the news because they were several times the normal price.
What a day of street eating costs
A simple day built from the tables above: a noodle soup at breakfast (VND 40,000 to 60,000), a banh mi or rice plate at lunch (VND 20,000 to 70,000), a few snacks and a sweet soup in the afternoon, and a grilled dish or pancakes in the evening. That comes to roughly VND 200,000 to 350,000 a person before drinks. Sit-down restaurants, seafood and beer raise it quickly; markets and one-dish stalls keep it low.
This is our arithmetic from the ranges above, not a quoted figure. Check current prices locally, and remember that prices at stalls aimed at visitors, in the old quarters and around the big markets, run higher.
Common questions
Questions readers ask
Is it normal to pay more than locals?
A small difference happens and is not worth disputing. Being charged several times the usual price is not normal, and the authorities in Hanoi have fined vendors for it.
Should I bargain at food stalls?
Not at stalls with fixed dish prices. For produce, snacks sold by weight and souvenirs, agreeing a price first is normal.
Can I pay by card at street stalls?
Rarely. Cash in dong is the norm, and many stalls also accept bank transfers by QR code. Card payments are more common at restaurants and cafes.
How current are these prices?
Each table names its source and the month of publication, from July 2025 to October 2026. Prices rose in 2026, so treat older figures as a lower bound.
