Is street food in Vietnam safe to eat?

Most visitors eat it without problems, but the risk is not zero. Official health advice says food that is fully cooked and served hot is the safest choice, and that raw vegetables and ice are riskier. The food safety page explains how to apply that at a stall.

How much money do I need for a day of street food?

In 2026 a bowl of noodle soup on the street commonly cost VND 40,000 to 60,000 in Hanoi and Hue, and a banh mi from a street cart about VND 20,000 in Ho Chi Minh City. Three street meals and a few snacks usually stay well under VND 300,000, but check the prices page for the ranges and their dates.

Do you recommend particular stalls?

No. The guide explains dishes, prices and how to order, and names streets and markets, but it does not recommend, rank or rate named stalls or restaurants.

Can I eat street food as a vegetarian?

Yes, with some effort. Look for the word chay, which means vegetarian, and ask about fish sauce and shrimp, which are used in many dishes that look meat-free. The vegetarian and dietary needs page lists the phrases.

Dish glossary

Which dishes are safest for someone with a shellfish allergy?

None can be called safe without asking, because shrimp paste and dried shrimp are added to broths and toppings. Dishes built on grilled pork or chicken, such as com tam, bun cha or chicken pho, are more often free of shellfish, but side rolls, dips and broths still need checking.

Is pho a breakfast dish?

It is commonly eaten in the morning, and early street vendors sold it at dawn and dusk. Today it is sold all day in the big cities, though many small stalls close once the broth runs out.

Why can I only find real cao lau in Hoi An?

The Da Nang tourism authority links the noodle to the lye water and the water of the Ba Le well used in Hoi An. Versions sold elsewhere use different noodles.

Does banh mi contain gluten?

Yes. The roll is wheat bread, and the soy sauce usually contains wheat too. It is the main street food to avoid on a gluten-free diet.

How to eat at a stall

Do I need to speak Vietnamese to order?

No. Pointing, holding up fingers and showing a written dish name are understood at almost every stall. Learning how to ask the price helps more than any other phrase.

Are the herbs and the tea on the table free?

The herbs, lime, chilli and sauces are part of the meal. Iced tea is often included or very cheap, while sealed wet towels, bottled drinks and snacks are usually charged. Ask if you are not sure.

Is it rude to sit at a table with strangers?

No. Shared tables are normal at street stalls. Take a free stool, nod, and get on with your meal.

Should I pay before or after eating?

At most stalls you pay after eating. At a few busy counters you order and pay first, so watch what the customers ahead of you do.

Prices by city

Is it normal to pay more than locals?

A small difference happens and is not worth disputing. Being charged several times the usual price is not normal, and the authorities in Hanoi have fined vendors for it.

Should I bargain at food stalls?

Not at stalls with fixed dish prices. For produce, snacks sold by weight and souvenirs, agreeing a price first is normal.

Can I pay by card at street stalls?

Rarely. Cash in dong is the norm, and many stalls also accept bank transfers by QR code. Card payments are more common at restaurants and cafes.

How current are these prices?

Each table names its source and the month of publication, from July 2025 to October 2026. Prices rose in 2026, so treat older figures as a lower bound.

Food safety

Is the ice in drinks safe?

The CDC advises avoiding ice unless you are reasonably sure it was made with safe water. Many visitors drink iced drinks in Vietnam without problems, but if you want to follow the official advice, order hot drinks or sealed bottles.

Should I avoid the raw herbs?

Raw herbs and lettuce are the uncooked part of most street meals and the main reason official advice warns about street food. A cautious approach is to put herbs into hot soup, or to skip them in your first days.

Is local rice spirit dangerous?

The UK Foreign Office reports deaths from methanol in alcoholic drinks in Vietnam and advises against buying liquor from street vendors or strangers. Bottled beer and sealed drinks are the lower-risk choice.

What is the emergency number in Vietnam?

Dial 115 for an ambulance, according to the UK Foreign Office.

Vegetarian and dietary needs

Is it easy to be vegetarian in Vietnam?

It is easy at dedicated chay eateries and harder at ordinary stalls, where fish sauce and shrimp are used in dishes that look meat-free. Learning the word chay and carrying a written note solves most of it.

Is fish sauce in vegetarian food?

It should not be in food labelled chay, but at ordinary stalls fish sauce is the default seasoning. Ask for no fish sauce, and expect soy sauce instead.

Can I find halal food on the street?

Rarely, outside the Muslim communities in Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta. Pork and lard are common, so ask about the stock and the cooking fat.

Which street foods are gluten-free?

Rice-based dishes such as pho, bun and com tam are free of wheat in their base, but soy sauce, hoisin, fried dough and shared oil can add gluten. Banh mi is wheat bread.

Markets and night markets

What time should I go to a market to eat?

For day markets, go in the morning, roughly 7 to 10 am, when the stalls are busiest and the choice is widest. Night markets start in the evening.

Are night markets more expensive?

Often a little, because they are aimed at visitors. Ask the price before you order, especially for seafood and anything sold by weight.

Are markets open during Tet?

Many close for several days around the Lunar New Year, and those that open may charge more. Check locally if you travel during Tet week.

Etiquette and tipping

Should I tip at street food stalls in Vietnam?

It is not expected. Rounding up or leaving small change is a friendly gesture if you want to, but stall prices do not assume a tip.

Is it rude to leave food in the bowl?

Leaving herbs or a little broth is normal. Ordering only what you will eat is appreciated at small stalls.

How do I call the server?

Say "em oi" to a young server or raise your hand. Avoid waving or clicking your fingers.

At lunch. Stalls typically open around 10:30 am, are busiest from noon to 1:30 pm, and many have sold out or closed by about 2 pm.

Is the Old Quarter more expensive?

No. Advertising spaces are labelled Advertisement, sit apart from the text, and advertisers have no say over what the pages say.

How do I report a wrong price?

Use the form on the contact page or email the editors. Say which dish, which city and street or market, what you paid and when.
